A domain alias allows you to point multiple domain names to the same website, which is useful for branding purposes. For example, if your website is accessible at example.com, you can register example.net as an alias and have it point to the same content. This not only enhances brand recognition but also helps in SEO by consolidating traffic under one primary domain.

How to do it

  1. Step 1: Log in to Plesk

Access your Plesk control panel with your credentials. Open a web browser and navigate to the URL provided by Internetport.se, typically something like https://your-server-ip-address:8443/. Enter your username and password when prompted.

  2. Step 2: Navigate to Websites & Domains

Once logged in, find the Websites & Domains section on the left-hand menu. Click on it to open your domain management dashboard.

  3. Step 3: Add Domain Alias

In the Websites & Domains tab, locate the domain for which you want to add an alias. Click on it to open its settings. Then, click on the Add Domain Alias button at the top of the page.

  4. Step 4: Enter the domain alias name

In the Create Domain Alias window that appears, enter the domain name you want to use as an alias in the Domain alias name field (e.g., example.net). Ensure that this domain is already registered and points to your server's IP address. The primary domain name will be shown by default in the target section, indicating where the alias will point.

  5. Step 5: Configure service settings

Review the settings that define which services should be available over the domain alias. By default, Plesk configures the domain alias to use the same settings as the primary domain, including web hosting and email. In most cases, you can leave these settings unchanged. However, if you need to customize any specific settings for your alias, such as enabling SSL/TLS or setting up a different mail server, adjust them accordingly.

  6. Step 6: Confirm and create

After configuring the necessary settings, click the Create button at the bottom of the window. The process typically takes 2-3 minutes, during which Plesk sets up the domain alias on your server. Once completed, you will receive a success message indicating that the domain alias has been successfully created.

  7. Step 7: Verify DNS settings

To ensure that your new domain alias works correctly, verify that its DNS records are properly configured to point to your server's IP address. This usually involves setting up an A record or a CNAME record in your domain registrar's control panel. If you're unsure how to do this, consult the documentation provided by your domain registrar or contact their support team.

Tips:

  • Ensure that both the primary domain and the alias are correctly configured in your DNS settings to avoid any downtime.
  • If you plan to use SSL/TLS for your domain alias, make sure to obtain a certificate that covers all domains or configure Plesk to automatically handle SSL certificates.
  • Regularly monitor the performance and security of your website to ensure that both the primary domain and aliases are functioning correctly.
