A public IP address allows your devices to be reached from anywhere on the internet. This is useful if you need remote access to servers, cameras, or other equipment on your network when you're away from home.
Background
By default, all Internetport customers are behind CGNAT (Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation), which means you receive a private IP address that cannot be accessed from outside your local network. However, you can order a public IP address for an additional 40 SEK per month. A public IP provides direct access to the internet and is essential if you are running services such as web servers, game servers, or need to set up remote desktop connections.
How to get a public IP address
-
Step 1: Create a support ticket
Contact Internetport support and create a ticket stating that you want to bind a public IP address to your router. You can reach out to our support team via the customer portal, email, or phone. When creating the ticket, make sure to specify your account details and clearly state your request for a public IP address.
-
Step 2: Wait for configuration
Our support team will arrange the public IP binding to your connection. The service costs 40 SEK per month and will be added to your subscription. This process usually takes 1-3 business days as our team configures your network settings.
-
Step 3: Configure your router
Once you receive confirmation that the public IP address has been assigned, you will need to configure your router to use this new IP. Access your router's administration panel by entering its IP address in a web browser (common default IPs include 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Log in using your administrator credentials.
Look for settings related to WAN, DHCP, or Static IP configuration and set your router to use the new public IP address provided by Internetport. Ensure that any necessary ports are forwarded if you plan to run specific services on this IP.
-
Step 4: Test connectivity
After configuring your router, test the connection using online tools such as whatismyip.com to confirm that your public IP address is correctly assigned. You can also try accessing any services you have set up from an external network to ensure everything is working as expected.
Tips for Using a Public IP Address
- Security First: Always ensure that your router and devices are secured with strong passwords and updated firmware. Use firewalls and security software to protect against unauthorized access.
- Port Forwarding: If you need to run specific services, make sure to properly configure port forwarding on your router to allow traffic through the necessary ports.
- Dynamic DNS (DDNS): Consider setting up a Dynamic DNS service if your public IP address changes frequently. This will allow you to access your network using a domain name instead of an IP address.
